Up to 12% of adults deal with a TMJ disorder at some point, and women are affected two to four times as often as men.

Clicking or popping when you chew. A jaw that aches by evening, locks, or won’t open all the way. Pain that spreads to the ear, the temples, or the neck. Problems with the temporomandibular joint, the hinge of your jaw, can make eating, talking, and even sleeping miserable.

Most people bounce between night guards, soft diets, and pain relievers. Those can help manage symptoms. But if nobody has looked at your neck, part of the picture may be missing.

Is a Night Guard the Solution?

Night guards, soft diets, and over-the-counter pain relievers all have a place, and for some people they are enough. But they manage the symptom at the jaw, not the strain that feeds it.

If forward head posture or a structural neck problem is adding load to the muscles that move your jaw, the symptoms tend to return as soon as the appliance comes out or the pills wear off.

The question worth answering first: is your neck part of the problem? That takes a structural assessment, including posture measurement and X-rays when indicated. It is the piece most TMJ sufferers have never had checked.

The Jaw and the Neck Are Connected

Your jaw does not work alone. It hangs from a skull that balances on your neck, and the muscles that move your jaw share nerves and attachments with the muscles that hold your head up. When the head drifts forward of the shoulders, a pattern called forward head posture, the lower jaw is pulled back and the muscles of the jaw and neck work overtime.

Over time that extra strain can show up as jaw pain, clicking, clenching, and tension headaches. That is why TMJ symptoms and neck problems so often travel together, and why treating the jaw alone sometimes isn’t enough. Your next step is to find out whether you have a structural problem. Have your posture and neck assessed by an expert in body structure, because that is where the cause most often hides.

How We Can Help

Natural and painless correction of structural problems is our clinical specialty. Using our methodology (Chiropractic BioPhysics), we measure your posture and spinal alignment, take X-rays when indicated, and correct the underlying structure rather than chasing the symptom. When TMJ symptoms are connected to forward head posture or a neck problem, correcting that structure removes a source of strain the jaw has been fighting against.

The research points the same way. A recent pilot randomized trial in the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine followed adults who had both TMJ dysfunction and forward head posture. Everyone received standard jaw care, and half also had their neck posture corrected with cervical extension traction, the same method we use at CSS. After six weeks, the posture correction group showed significantly better neck alignment and significantly lower TMJ severity scores than jaw care alone. It is an early study, but it supports what we see in practice: when the neck is part of the problem, correcting it helps the jaw. Read the study here.

We also know when TMJ care belongs somewhere else. If your exam shows no structural neck issue, we will tell you, and a dentist who focuses on TMJ disorders may be the right next step. Many patients do best with both working together.
